The name of this building is Alliance Française Centre. Alliance Française de Sydney occupies the basement, ground floor, 1st, 2nd and 13th floors. Levels 3 to 12 are for sale but currently owned by AJ Lucas Group Limited which is the developer and the builder of the site. The building was officially opened on 5 November 2009 by Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of New South Wales and M. Michel Filhol, French Ambassador in Australia. The architect is Harry Seidler who refined his design philosophy throughout his career and the Alliance Française building represents his last commercial development. Seidler has been explicit about his debt to history, and the Baroque in particular has served as an inspiration for his later career. In the design of the building, this influence can be seen in the curved forms of the glass façade at ground level, the prominent curved awning in both plan and elevation to the street and the circular, granite staircase inside the front entry.
