Newtown House
The works are concentrated at the rear of a free-standing two-storey house and involves a steel framed and glazed addition which is read as a separate structure from the main residence. It incorporates aluminium framed double-glazed doors and windows to minimize noise from neighbouring flats and to maintain internal thermal comfort due to the south orientation, while serving to increase solar access and improve physical and visual connections to gardens at the rear of the property. A frameless highlight window provides solar access and views to sky and tree canopies. Blackbutt floors, basaltina, bamboo and black resin form the primary materials used in the rear space. A steel framed pelmet wrapping around the façades conceals lighting externally and blinds internally. The client Glenn Behan who is also an interior designer, provided kitchen design concepts based on the architects overall original designs for the project and also provided design input for particular interior elements.
