Wolkenturm Open-air Stage
Grafenegg Park in Austria features a remarkable stand of trees and, in the centre, a large Tudor-style palace. Concerts have been held here for some time now, but The Land of Lower Austria wants to expand the site into an international cultural venue. Helping to make this happen will be the annual Grafenegg Music Festival and modern architecture. This open-air stage, with its 'cloud tower' roof thrusting audaciously skyward and showing visitors the way, was inaugurated in the summer of 2007. The most obvious reason for its name is the window at the back of the stage which allows the audience to look through to the landscape and the sky beyond, even during concerts. But according to the architects, the entire stage is cloudlike; its shiny metal surface reflects the sky and the trees. In contrast to the stage roof, the tiers of spectator seating are more landscaped than built. The architects chose an existing natural depression into which they dug stage, tiers and circulation routes.
