This new school occupies a privileged spot: a rare piece of empty land in the medieval town centre of Krk where the physical disarray typical of a society in transition was prevented by the existence of the city wall. The building follows the morphology of the slope and the existing urban tissue on the one hand and the restored ramparts on the other, creating a new dynamic sequence of public spaces. The contrast between the bright colours of the interior, the layer of large undressed pebbles covering the roof and the austerity of the smooth concrete and stuccoed external surfaces, underlines this spatial continuity between this new piece of architecture and the existing urban fabric. Its realization required more than inventive architects: a receptive local community and an understanding heritage department were just as crucial. In this case it led to the creation of an autonomous architecture, capable of achieving an equilibrium between landscape, heritage and contemporary reality.
