Olafur Eliasson exhibited a haunting light piece at the 2005 Venice Biennale called 'Your Black Horizon' in a custom-designed pavilion by David Adjaye. The Exhibition is part of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Limited Edition Art Pavilions, which host unique specially commissioned sight-specific art projects on a rotating basis. In 2007 the Pavilion was moved from San Lazzaro Island in Venice to Lopud Island, Croatia. David Adjaye designed the Pavilion to be a flexible and easily adaptable structure with multi-purpose capabilities and over 400 square meters exhibition space. The exhibition space is windowless. A thin horizontal line directed through a narrow gap at eye level serves as the primary light source. The light is constantly changing colors and rotates through the color spectrum of an accelerated day every 15 minutes - from reds and blues to white, pink and purple, fading into the blue evening lights - and is calibrated to the specific light condition of the surrounding environment.

Gudrun says:
We did not know about this piece of art on Lopud and discovered it by chance - which made the experience even more overwhelming. Walking through that mediterranean garden up to the pavillion and them immersing ourselves into the Black Horizon - a memory I will always cherish!

News from Thyssen Bornemisza Art Contemporary:

Your black horizon Art Pavilion by Olafur Eliasson and David Adjaye on the Croatian island of Lopud reopens for the fourth consecutive year and is accessible free of charge daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, through September 30, 2010.

With over 4,000 visitors per season, the pavilion has become a recognized art project and top spot in the region of Dubrovnik. A contemporary artistic statement, it attracts tourists and locals to visit Lopud, one of Croatia's 1,000 islands which are a primary destination to thousands of daily enthusiasts attracted by their natural beauty. The pristine landscape of the Elaphiti island with cypress trees, cacti and olive groves is the setting for the site specific installation.

In an interdisciplinary approach, merging the fields of art and architecture, Danish-Iclandic artist Olafur Eliasson and London-based architect David Adjaye were commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary to conceive an environment in which ephemeral visual appearance and architectural formulations were considered as “an interlocking equation.” In the windowless pavilion, a thin horizontal line of light directed through a narrow gap at eye level runs around the black space, uninterrupted by any visual obstruction, serving as the primary light source. Calibrated to the specific light conditions on Lopud, the light changes color through a cyclic spectrum of a single day – from sunrise to sunset. The light installation Your black horizon by Olafur Eliasson reflects a horizon line, an image familiar to all sailors, onto the back of the retina of all eyes. Accustomed to its gaze it is a sensational experience for art lovers and sailors alike.

How to get there? The pavilion is now located near the old Rennaissance Fortress of Lopud. Take the ferry from Dubrovnik and ask for the way to the old Fortress and the Thyssen Bornemisza Art Pavilion at the City of Lopud.
