In March 2001, the Danish Ministry of Culture organized a competition on the design of an extension to OrdrupgaardIt had to include exhibition rooms for both special exhibitions and for the permanent collection in order to improve space and conservation conditions as well as create new and improved facilities for the public, a foyer, a café and a multi-purpose hall. Seven firms were invited to participate in the competition. Zaha Hadid has based her project on a strategy where the landscape is decoded, interpreted and translated into diagram forms that lead to the formation of a number of structural models. Through this working method, she has managed to incorporate the complex program demands in an elegant, spatial shape with architectonically surprising flows of spaces. It is a brilliant architectonic expression that will not only be an experience in itself; it will also promote extraordinary quality experiences in connection with the presentation of the museum’s works of art.
