l'Historial de la Vendée
PLAN01 has created a history museum which meets the client's wish that the building should blend into the landscape. In fact, it completely disappears into the 19 hectares of parkland located along the banks of the Boulogne river. The bronze-green building inserts itself into the site below an 8000 square meter roof. The outcome of many adjustments based on both real and virtual 3D models, this complex roof profile is perhaps best understood as the main façade. It is composed of multiple facets which echo the landscape and yet are sufficiently stylized to allow one to distinguish the built form from the natural. The structure is composed of perforated steel U panels, and a 10 cm-thick composite of tar paper and glass fibres. This layer of insulation and waterproofing is, in turn, covered with a layer of lightweight landscaping: 15 cm of composted earth and wild grasses, specially cultivated in the Black Forest. In spring, the rooftop will give the appearance of a floating prairie.
