Konsum Building Dessau Törten
Gropius´ building for the Dessau Konsum consumers cooperative was erected as a landmark for the Dessau Törten Settlement. Due to the fact that the housing estate was on the periphery of Dessau, the building was built as a market place for its inhabitants. The flat one-storey section was designated to a central grocery store, which was connected to a butcher's shop and a bakery on either side by folding walls. The five-storey section contained staff rooms in the apron and an apartment with three rooms and two balconies on each of its levels. The construction was executed as a reinforced concrete structure with brick masonry walls. With its white-washed plaster and dark grey window sashes, the building introduces the typical handwriting of Walter Gropius.
