Residential and Office Building
Münich architects Allmann Sattler Wappner have converted a listed factory building, mainly for their own use. With the exception of the external walls, a few iron supports and an old stairwell, the insides of the existing building (dating from 1893) were completely removed. The architects now occupy the first floor and the attic and, as one would expect for a factory conversion, the large office is completely open-plan. The rooms on the attic storey were set well back from the original wall line, allowing space for a roof garden. The second building on the site, an elongated six-storey block that extends between the street and the factory, now contains nine apartments. The technical innovation in this building is to be found in the staggered, street-facing windows: to achieve soundproofing, the window units have several parts: behind the upright rectangular façade panel, there is a horizontally pivoting window that can be used to regulate ventilation without admitting traffic noise.
