Artur Woll Haus
The new Artur Woll Haus, part of the University of Siegen is a successful pilot for energy reducing techniques. Using yearly 23 kwh/m2 it is one of Germany’s most economical buildings. On the top of a steep slope, west of the campus is a beautifully situated mountain terrace. Partially covered with the debris of the past: at first a mine, at a later stage an energy plant. On this plot, not easily suitable for building, the university had in mind an exceptionally energy-efficient building. All building materials have been monitored on their energetic aspects, from origin to demolition. Fresh air is lead into the building through a channel in the rock, so it can first cool down or heat up. The façades and rooms are adapted in form and function to the sun: a short, curved back protects the congress rooms from the dark north, the guest rooms have a wonderful view to the east, and like three brilliant crystals the workplaces admit the maximum of precious light.
