Geodesic Dome
The Geodesic Dome, which was erected in 1954 in Detroit, has been transferred to the Vitra Campus at Weil am Rhein in 2000. It is a fine example of Richard Buckminster Fuller's intentions: the reduction of material and maximization of effect, which he called 'Ephemeralization'. This principle of 'doing more with less' by the use of technological advances is one of the most important guidelines for modern architecture and has been adapted by a lot of fellow architects like Toyo Ito, Santiago Calatrava and Sir Norman Foster. Fuller constructed similar structures in later years, for example the Expo Pavillion in Montreal in 1967. The Geodesic Dome at the Vitra Campus is constructed as a lightweight structure with a membrane cover and is currently used as a space for events by the Vitra company.
