Acropolis Museum
The New Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum which was designed to house findings from the site of the Acropolis. In 2000, an architectural invitation was announced. The design proposal of Bernard Tschumi with Michael Photiadis was unanimously selected by the competition committee. There are three main concepts of the winning project: light, movement, and a tectonic and programmatic element. In accordance with the design team, these concepts offer a simple museum with the mathematical and conceptual clarity of ancient Greece. The extensive use of concrete and glass was carefully selected to contrast with the past and to express the simplicity of the exhibition spaces, while the use of marble was chosen in respect of the Acropolis. The lower level is constructed with a glass floored ramp overlooking the excavations of the site below. The middle level in trapezoidal shape accommodates the archaic gallery, and the top level in rectangular shape houses the Parthenon Gallery.
