Holocaust Memorial Center
The institution opened on the 60th anniversary of the start of the Holocaust in Hungary. It is the first of its kind in East-Central Europe to research and present the Holocaust in a comprehensive manner by focusing on its historical and social dimensions. 60.000 names of the approximately 600.000 victims are engraved as a memento onto the 8 meter tall glass wall surrounding the courtyard. The building complex is a mix of classical and modern architecture. It incorporates an old synagogue, exhibition halls and documentation archives. The building’s asymmetrical outline, the dislocated walls, and the descending stairs in the exhibition halls, all symbolize the distorted and twisted time of the Holocaust. The institution was awarded Nivó Prize of Architecture for restoration and rehabilitation of a historic monument in 2005.
