Le Corbusier conceived the master plan of Chandigarh as analogous to the human body, with the Capitol Complex as a clearly defined head. The complex comprises three architectural masterpieces (the projects can be found separately on MIMOA): the 'Secretariat', the 'High Court' and the 'Legislative Assembly', separated by large piazzas. The High Court was constructed from 1951 to 1957. The structure has a double roof, which looks like an inverted umbrella. A huge egg-crate screen covers the fa├žade of the building. The Secretariat was constructed from 1953 to 1959. This building is the largest and tallest of the three edifices. The structure resembles the shape of an eight-storied concrete slab. The Legislative Assembly completes the complex. Located in the centre is the Open Hand Monument. This metallic sculpture is the official emblem of Chandigarh and was also designed by Le Corbusier (text from

How to get there? For visiting the buildings of Capitol Complex you have to obtain prior permission from the Director, Department of Tourism, Chandigarh Administration, Additional Deluxe building, Sector 9, Chandigarh 160009. On any working days between 10.00 and 17.00 except on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. You can also obtain permission from the Tourist Officer, Dept. of Tourism (Additional Deluxe building, adjoining to Police Headquarters, Sec-9, Chandigarh)
