Winner of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award for architecture in June 2005, the RIBA explained: “Even ignoring the history and context, this is a building that sets new standards for leisure centres. Sport is recognized as a good way to promote health, build social capital and encourage social integration. The Falls Leisure Centre does all of this and looks set to be a regenerative flywheel in a location that has much need of such help.” The structure maximizes the entry of light, creating a sense of space. Next to the RIBA award, they won a Civic Trust mention in 2006 and a William Keown Trust Access award and the Design Innovation award for 2006 from the Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA). This is the first new leisure facility to open in Belfast since the 1980s, and one of the most modern centres in Northern Ireland.
