The creation of the garden represents the final chapter in a very long history. The complex of which the new garden is part is made up of a series of four buildings situated on a low hill, of which the small chapel dedicated to St. Lucy, dating to the early fifteenth century, is the oldest. Where the garden is now located there was simply a field with a few scattered fruit trees and a small number of olive tress decimated by a recent frost. Exploiting the natural layout of the terrain, the project consists in the first place in the creation of an airy parterre marked out by beds of box, within which areas of Santolina and rough lawn are set out in a chequered pattern. The Santolina, which at present still conserves the plantation appearance will subsequently assume its cushion shape, completely covering the area of the flower-beds. The furthest flower-beds, set at the lower margin of the project area, have been planted with iceberg roses.
