The National Art Center in Tokyo was designed in a collaborative project between the architect Kisho Kurokawa and Nihon Sekkei, Inc. It was built on the former site of the Institute of Industrial Science of the University of Tokyo over a period of nearly four years, from July 2002 to May 2006, with factors such as the environment and earthquake safety in mind. The National Art Center is a unique and innovative art exhibition facility: Instead of maintaining a permanent collection, it makes the most of a total of 14,000 square meters of exhibition space, the largest in Japan, and focuses on serving as a venue for various art exhibitions.
