SKIP
In 2002, the Luxembourg government created Le Fonds Belval to redevelop a large, disused industrial site. SKIP, a pavilion located on the edge of the site, would inform the public about projects already under construction or in the pipeline. The pavilion had to satisfy a number of criteria such as a flexible interior, visibility and landmark potential in a constantly changing landscape. The competition was won by the Belgian-Luxembourg practice Polaris. They proposed a distinctive volume with a profile resembling a wave, built in wood and covered with pre-pressed bright yellow corrugated aluminium sheeting. All the pieces were prefabricated and mounted on site in a month-and-a-half. The side walls support the roof without any need for intermediate columns. Polaris must be credited for not labouring to be original. Instead of seeking a striking visual effect, their pavilion attracts the attention with its playful, logo-like silhouette.
