The School Buitenveldert in Amsterdam is extended with a two-phased addition. To the monumental school, originally designed by architect Duintjer, two new wings are built, and the central core has been topped with a new multi media room. Designing a modern extension to a monument means to find a balance between maintaining the architectural style, and building innovations for future use. We chose a subtle, cautious approach, where the details of the construction and connection to the existing building played an important role. The new part exists out of two new wings of classrooms, music rooms and creative premises from gym which also can serve as a theatre. A media room which is barely visible from the street, is built on top of the existing gymnasium. The school had as little disruption as possible during the building period, and to make sure they could use all classrooms during construction, the project was built in two phases.
