The national academy for fine arts in Amsterdam is a former barracks complex, a national monument, that has been transformed without adjusting the original building. New elements have been inserted on the courtyard and outside of the complex and connected to the complex by aerial bridges. The original building has been restored and creates a modest and neutral background. The background fits the character of its original function and enables artists who have their atelier there now to claim and personalize the space. In the new parts, offices, a canteen and a library are situated. Within the unity of its whole, these functions do have their own character and atmosphere. The National Academy for Fine Arts was selected for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 1992
