De Rembrandttoren is the highest skyscraper of Amsterdam and is named after the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. The tower is situated at the Omval, in the Amstel, just south of the Amstelstation. The tower is 149,85 m high, including the 15 m antenna. The 35 storeys house 56 different companies. In 2002 the tower was in the national news, when a 59 year old man entered the building and took several hostages, trying to indicate his displeasure with "manipulation by resellers of widescreen televisions". The man claimed they are guilty of selling "creative nonsense". He felt he was “forced”to buy a widescreen TV because movies showed black borders on old TV’s.
