On the Steigereiland in Amsterdam, an attractive private house has been built. Its striking thatched roof looks like a free-standing sculpture in the middle of the rational city. It does, however, comply with all kinds of programmatic parameters specific to the location. The thatched roof acts as a light-catcher and provides access to the large roof terrace. It also acts as a breastwork and guarantees privacy. On the street façade it meets the garden wall of the urban plan. The house was inspired by villas from the Amsterdam School, that were being built in and around Amsterdam at the beginning of the 20th century. The beauty of brick, wood and straw have been combined here to create an expressive architecture (text from architect's website).
