These student houses are pretty small: 35 to 55 m2. To compensate their lack of physical space they get a large window on the street. The windows are set, not in a conventional matrix, but move from side to side. The ground floor is reserved for commercial space and large entrée halls with big glass façades. The choice of materials is based upon the old monumental canal-facing warehouses. The glass windows are enclosed with metal, a modern version of the wooden frames surrounding the windows on the canal houses. The brick is painted black. This way the façade is perceived as a flat stretch instead of separate bricks. This is an effect often seen at the canals in Amsterdam.
