The anthroposophical child centre De Es in Assen provides care and schooling for children from 0 to 12 years. The various functions of the building orientate towards the movement of the sun. Primary school classrooms to the east welcome the morning sun, in the south the rooms of the day-care centre profit from the afternoon sun and the after school child care centre on the west side receives the sun in late afternoon. Spaciously designed corridors in the primary school are interrupted by circular blank spaces in the ceiling, through which light falls from the roof to the ground floor – and heaven and earth become connected. In positioning, height and measurements the windows are adapted to the child’s age and the various pedagogical demands. In the day-care centre the windows are orientated towards the world inside, while the measurement of the windows in the after school care centre belongs to the world of the grown-ups.
