The Church 'Broerekerk' in Bolsward is the oldest building in this city. It dates from the 13th century and was owned by monastic order of Friars the 'Minderbroeders'. In May 1980 the building burned down. After a design competition in 2006 the church was renovated / restored and equipped with a glass roof. The wish of the town council was to keep the ruin as it is and protect it against the elements. The architect designed the new glass roof in the shape of the original arbour, which brought back the spatial effect in the church. The roof is suspended from filigree steel trusses in the outer contour of the old roof. The monument in this project is completely unaffected, including waste glass in the windows, moss and the occasional emergent vegetation. With this glass roof the building is back as renewed monument in the cityscape.
