Netherlands Forensic Institute
Located on the outskirts of Ypenburg in The Hague, along the A4 highway, the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) has a total of four floors, one of which is hidden in an embankment. The building is a glass volume of 125 by 80 m, encased in an openwork steel box that acts as solar shading. To ensure optimal solar shading on all sides of the building, the steel and glass boxes are slightly out of alignment. These big black steel ‘beams’ resemble Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s famous Neue National Galerie (New National Gallery) in Berlin. Only this time the minimalist glass and steel enclosure does not have one steel-beam at the roof, but four. Inside, the central entrance hall crosses the entire building, and passes 6 different patios.
Approximately six hundred autopsies are performed at the NFI each year.
