Spikvoorde II
Spikvoorde is part of De Vijfhoek (The Pentagon), an urban development district in Deventer. Within a short period of time 2 commission opportunities in this area were presented. Although they differ in their program and principal, the two projects are indeed related in their syntax and structure. The location of the second project is similar to the first Spikvoorde-assignment: an all-round open and urban context. Together they form a kind of 'family'. With that argument, to relate the two buildings architecturally, the architect convinced the second principal and subsequently secured the design commission for the seven low-rise houses. The design is bases on the same structure; starting with one basic shape which is repeated several times by means of a combined rotation and translation. By repeating this algorithm six times a more concentric volume around an enclosed courtyard arises. The result is a housing block without a front ans rear, but with an inside and an outside.
