The Municipality of Dongen is housed in a town hall that was rebuilt, renovated and extended several times from its origins in 1857, eventually resulting in a conglomerate of buildings which exemplified the historical development of the city. RAU was commissioned to reorganise and extend the town hall again, and designed a new glass shell to cover and unite all existing buildings. This created a large space, an open central interior, and at the same time an energy producing roof. The glass fa├žade is covered with solar panels with a dual function: offering sunshade for the interior and electricity for its users. The whole complex is turned into a solidary building, both physically and aesthetically united. And to not break with the history of the place, RAU added a small new extension to the whole: a new titanium clad council chamber, also used as a wedding room.
