location Heerenveen
function housing, urban plan

In an expansion of Heerenveen, with Ashok Bhalotra as town planner, a country estate has been included as an enhancement. In the design of the estate, formal French garden architecture served as guiding principle. In realizing the estate, grouping apartments in a central building surrounded by the estate grounds proved unfeasible. In an attempt to come down to a more moderate pricing, while generating sufficient financial return to realize the estate grounds, Sjoerd Soeters chose to reverse the organization: the buildings now encircle the grounds. The design proces was influenced, in part, by French urban grand hotels and Bath's John Wood the Elder. The estate design has been developed along the lines of Marly, an estate of Louis XIV, that has rows of buildings lining its edges (text from architect's website).
