The content of the building for Sound and Vision is the Dutch audiovisual past, from the very beginning right up to the events of yesterday. The 18-metre-deep pit in which the premises are built, houses 5 levels of collections in optimal storage conditions; while above ground there is room for all the visitors’ facilities and for experiencing the media in Sound and Vision, also spread over 5 levels. The third element is the office building of the institute. The three volumes together enclose a large public atrium. Graphic designer Studio Jaap Drupsteen designed the glass facade which is draped as a second skin around the building. Over two thousand panes of glass, developed specially for the Institute of Sound and Image, have been engraved with over 750 archive images from the institute's television and film collection. With natural daylighting, they turn the new building into a veritable work of art. Merkx + Girod designed the interior, together with main architect Neutelings Riedijk.
