This is the foremost museum for old masters and contemporary fine art in the province of Limburg. It has a mixture of the old paintings (including Pieter Breughel the Younger and Giovanni del Biondo) as well as a modern art collection. The museum is housed in a building designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi. With a central street, covered in daylight, all 4 storeys in the wings of this E-shaped building are reached. At the water edge is the strange looking tower, which houses a bar and restaurant on the ground floor. Together with the Cupola on the River Maas, it is one of Maastricht's most prominent landmarks. The late Aldo Rossi has achieved international distinction as a theorist, an author, an artist, a teacher and as an architect. He has been compared to LeCorbusier as a painter-architect and described as "a poet who happens to be an architect." He met with a fatal accident on 4 September 1997.
