Plussenburgh is an apartment building for the elderly. It stands in Ijsselmonde, one of Rotterdam's Tuinsteden (garden suburbs). These Tuinsteden are earmarked for a thorough overhaul during which flats will be renovated and the quality of public space upgraded. As the first new building to be realized, Plussenburgh is a key project in the urban regeneration operation to provide Ijsselmonde with a new and identifiable centre. Arons & Gelauff followed the existing spatial typology -slabs and towers- but in the façade treatment they opted for contrast with the surrounding predominance of flat façades, galleries and the colour grey by introducing enclosed galleries, sculptural shapes and bright red, yellow and purple colours, applied in a more or less arbitrary pattern. The brackets supporting the balconies make the same wavy motion in a vertical direction and double as balcony partitions. The three-dimensional effect is further strengthened by the twisting of the steel balustrades.
