Piet Blom
location Rotterdam
function horeca, dwellings, urban plan
contributed by dirkverwoerd

For Blom, the cathedral-like Blaak development (the cube houses) epitomized the fashionable, metropolitan side of R'dam. This was in contrast to the development on the Spaanse Kade (Spanish Quay), where he wanted to evoke memories of the pre-war working-class harbour neighbourhood. The development required a high housing density: 205 dwellings per hectare. Blom devised of a system within which all the desired variations in dwellings were possible without the need for all kinds of major changes to the basic structure. Despite its fanciful style, the Spaanse Kade is structured in a very obvious way. Blom thought on the basis of the construction itself, he was always exceptionally meticulous with his working details. The wide variation in architecture and the typical stylistic features give the project an almost Mediterranean feel. Blom: "As the quays get the afternoon and evening sun, they make excellent terraces." Blom thought of the Spaanse Kade as his most successful project.
