Strand aan de Maas
After winning a design competition the Rotterdam based young architecture firm MONADNOCK was able to realize this wooden beach-house in the centre of Rotterdam, next to the eye-catching Erasmus Bridge. The large white letters on the front façade (strand meaning beach) draw attention to the curious situation: a real sandy beach on the shores of the river.
The beach-house is constructed in May, with a flexible and cheap construction and will be dismantled in September. For the first time in 2007 when Rotterdam was the European City of Architecture, and will be repeated for three years, so the last year it is erected will be in 2009.
The pavilion is built for the annual festival Beach on the river Maas, which takes place from May until the end of September. There will be concerts, dance-nights, sporting events and general relaxation time.
