The design for the library of the Catholic University Brabant (KUB) continues the basic principles as formulated in the master plan of 1988. The buildings realised by Jos Bedaux in the fifties turned the KUB campus into a clear green void with fascinating architectural objects. Over the years, the campus was filled up with small-scale school buildings.
The new master plan for the KUB complex continues Bedaux' line and demonstrates its strength. The library in the heart of the university campus supports and enhances this structure. On the one hand the aim was to create an independent building. On the other they tried to anchor the building in its surroundings.
The library is placed on a base that consists of an earthen wall overgrown with grass. This is where you can find the warehouses. The main level can be accessed via a walkway above the esplanade. The upper floors can be regarded as a large library landscape. Responsible project architect within OD 205 was Martien Jansen.
