Borgund Stavechurch is one of the most important historical examples of Norwegian timber architecture. It is placed in a dish in the agricultural landscape, backing onto a hill. The new visitor's centre tries to recreate and reinforce the original situation by following the formations of the existing terrain. The visitor's centre contains exhibitions, information and refreshments, and as more tourists are happy to view the church from the centre, it protects the original structure from wear. The new timber building is simple in its detailling, in contrast to the ornate church. The façades are in untreated heartwood pine, with glass facing both the approach and the church. All interior partitions are kept away from the external walls, leaving the visitor's centre as one big space, 'furnished' with a variety of elements.
