Bolko Loft
The Bolko Loft is an example of an adaptation of postindustrial architecture, still rare in Silesia. After extraction was discontinued at Zaklady Gorniczo-Hutnicze 'Orzel Bialy', a mining and steelworks complex in Bytom, the lamp room and time clock room were scheduled for demolition. The structure is suspended on eight reinforced-concrete posts, derelict and 'half-dis-integrated'. Its unique location, 'frank' form and adequate cubic content made it the place for a future home. The existing steel structure was sanded and painted, juxtaposing it with the ceiling where the concrete was exposed after other layers were removed. The colour scheme of the interior and of the elevation was intended to fit well into the typical spectrum of greyish hews used in heavy industry, with deliberate avoidance of the popular silver. The only new-built content is the toilet and dressing room, that have been accentuated with some red (text from www.baunetz.de).
