The 1998 Lisbon World Expo was remarkable both because of its exhibition?s success as well as for its remaining urban legacy. Built from the ground-up in a derelict area of the city, the Expo managed to create a thriving neighborhood, which was renamed Parque da Nações, and its main buildings were kept and continue to be used today. The Expo?98 Urban Development Plan, managed by the company Parque Expo, covered a total of 300+ ha. The most central part of it, around the Olivais Dock, occupied about 70 ha. and was to house the Expo itself. The objective of the design process was to create an urban space that could subsequently be appropriated by the city, rather than just serving the one-off Exposition. Risco was responsible for the general design of the overall site and the design of the public spaces, based on a 7x7m web that structures the ground design and lays down the rules for locating furniture, equipment, facilities, infrastructures, planted areas and artistic interventions.
