Centro Civico Anabel Segura
This is one of many civic amenities in Alcobendas. It is modest, yet thoughtful and creatively designed. The building occupies a triangular site, to the south of the old town centre. The ground floor - itself triangular in plan - is given over to local government duties, whilst the first floor is 'L-shaped' and houses the local public library. This space looks to the outside via a heavily louvered wall on the west elevation, whilst the prospect on the east side is into a small triangular court. The exterior is understated and treated very simply, being clad entirely in stone. What marks out the building is a huge lantern light or strip of clerestory glazing standing over the north elevation, providing natural illumination to the stairwell and children's library. The scheme was built when there was little context to work with: only a housing scheme some way away, and sadly, adjacent, less sensitive developments, which now seem to dwarf it.
