Ageing is a contemporary 'problem' and knowing that half the population in Southern Europe will soon be over the age of 65 means that we must rethink our conception of space, both public and private, and how to make it user-friendly to less mobile individuals. Manuel Ocaña's main goal was to build a residential centre for the elderly that 'didn't look like a hospital'. All rooms, attached to each other and curving and bending to fit the plot, have direct access to the garden-entrance. This architectural approach not only ensures physical autonomy and psychological security, it promotes social relations and passive observation as well. The centre has a colour coding system, providing guidance for daily movement. In the garden, beds with differently coloured plants identify the programmatic areas: yellow is for Rehabilitation, blue for Occupational Therapy and white for Relaxation. Inside, a projection of the site's topographic contours on the ceiling conforms to this system.
