Day Centre for Alzheimer Patients
Windows are of great importance in the design of hospitals and nursing homes, because sick people and the elderly spend most of their time indoors. The trick is to use façade openings and outdoor spaces to open up a building without diminishing the sense of protection and safety. This, along with the logistical organization and the client's desire for flexibility and an energy-efficient building, were the determining factors in Lamela architects' design of an Alzheimer Day Care Centre in Madrid. The complex, which was built in phases, comprises nine low horizontal residential blocks that fit in with the green suburban surroundings. Each block encloses a sunny courtyard that acts as an extension of the interior thanks to the horizontal fenestration. The blocks are all equipped with solar panels which, together with the highly insulated façades, windows and natural ventilation system, deliver the desired energy efficiency.
