The Castilla y León Convention Center (Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Castilla y Leon) sits on a sloping site in the southwest part of the old town. Its simple, almost plain yet elegant exterior conceals a surprising interior, only hinted at by the arches on the façade. The building is accessed via a public stair and footpath running east-west across the site. To the south lies a simple loggia roof supported by a series of slim columns, which offers illumination to offices and an exhibition area below. Adjacent to this is an outdoor meeting space formed by two curved amphitheatre-like terraces. To the north are the two convention halls, the smaller tucked under the larger. A spectacular 'floating' concrete dome crowns the upper space, with natural light spilling down around its edges. Square on plan, it appears to be formed from a series of stepped concentric rings. Like a gigantic, gravity-defying baldacchino, it lends the space a unique and almost religious dignity.
