San Fernando de Henares Town Hall
This project, won in competition, integrates the partial remains of an 18th-century tapestry factory. The site lies on the west side of the main square, and most of the remains were situated on the eastern side of the site. New fabric here has been integrated in a simple manner, making it easily identifiable from the old. On the west elevation, things are different. In total contrast, the elevational treatment is one of abstract modernity. This elevation reflects to two halves of the brief; an official side and a public side. The northern half consists of three horizontal slit windows, whilst the southern side, glazed at ground level, begins with an open court at first floor, the southern wall of which appears to balance precariously on its neighbour. The court is lined with alabaster. Internally the spaces vary, but the key feature is variety; double and triple height spaces are interconnected and wrapped around each other.
