Flundran is an attractive quarter that skirts Malmö's old city with the Castle Park and Västra Hamnkanalen on one side, and the former commercial harbour district (Universitetsholmen) on the other. The new District Court, which also acts as the Court of Appeal for Skåne and Blekinge, constitutes a fulcrum for the surrounding characteristic and highly disparate sites. The building's form reflects the contours of the terrain and cuts a crisp, self-assured profile in relation to its surroundings: water and green areas. An existing late-modernist building on the site, used for letting offices, is to be preserved, while the new building incorporates nine courtrooms, three floors of offices and an underground car park. The simple, robust image presented by the new building interacts harmoniously with the old harbour areas. This image is underscored by the choice of materials and design for the facades.
