Volkshaus Brasserie & Bar
This is the first phase of a long-term renovation project of the 1925 "Volkshaus" building - in addition to the existing concert hall and beer garden, later on a hotel, a shop and a library are also to be reinstated.
In the renovation of the bar and the brasserie, H&dM have removed all the unnecessary interventions from the 1970s, thus bringing back the original architectural character. All the new elements refer to the original - e.g., oval windows or light fixtures, chairs and table tops. Materials used include wood, leather and tin. Wallpaper recreating 17th c. Basel as depicted by M. Merian cover the restroom walls thus alluding to the centuries-old history of the "Volkshaus" predecessors.
