REKA Holiday Village
Founded in 1939, REKA is a Swiss organisation that helps low-income families afford holidays. It employs a number of strategies to facilitate its goals, including its own holiday villages. The one here in Urnasch, in the centre of an area popular with walkers, is one of the more recent developments. It sits on a triangular site on the eastern side of the village, adjacent to the railway station, on ground that falls away to the east. Set against Appenzellerstrasse are four linked rectangular blocks. These house a communal kitchen & cafeteria, indoor sports facilities, kindergarten, library, TV Room and an indoor swimming pool. The final unit houses a collection of farm animals. Sets perpendicularly to these units, on the other side of a linear street, are three 'L' shaped, two storey wings of differing sizes, which contain the 50 family guest apartments. All the buildings have timber superstructures set upon concrete bases, and all the flat roofs are planted.
