Hotel Therme Vals
In the Hotel adjacent to the world famous Therme Spa Peter Zumthor has redesigned 52 rooms without altering the hotel’s original 1960s structure. As part of the redevelopment, Der Rote Saal (The Red Room), the hotel’s restaurant, was extended. Although some parts of the complex are still in their original state, they are all gradually being brought up to the standard of the Therme itself, meaning the guest experiences. In 1983, the town council bought the thermal spring and hotel, and the company that manages the site today, Hotel und Thermalbad Vals AG, is still 100% owned by the council. In 1986, Peter Zumthor, an architect from Haldenstein, Switzerland, was commissioned to build a new spa, and the resulting project received praise from around the world. It has been described as “a lesson in combining audacity with aesthetics“, “a totally unique, yet traditional spa and therapeutic centre that is the last word in peaceful sensuality“, and “a world first in spas”.
