The innovative design of the Arc building reflects the geography and varied industries of Hull, whilst embracing a number of sustainable features. An under-floor water heating system provides efficient background heat for the large open space; the cooling system is fed by a galvanised trough that collects rainwater at the foot of the sloping roof; a mechanical garden of wind turbines and photovoltaic panels installed on poles provide additional power with the help of a system of inverters. The building does not have traditional foundations. Instead, the whole structure sits on a grid of pre-cast concrete pads, which sit straight onto the ground. The only connection to the ground is via services such as waste, water and electricity.
