Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre
The Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre is the result of an international design competition held by the National trust for Scotland in 2004. The virtually untouched site of the last battle fought on British soil, in which King George II's troops defeated Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite uprising, is of major historical significance. Set back from the battlefield, the new 2400 square metre building is defined by a wave-form roof and a 150 metre long wall that passes through the building and out into the landscape. The centre was designed in collaboration with international exhibition designers, Ralph Appelbaum Associates, with input from historians and archaeologists as well. Inside there are a series of controlled exhibition spaces, educational space, a restaurant, shop and support facilities. A landscaped roof platform offers panoramic views over the battlefield, a war grave for over 1500 soldiers. The building has been designed as a model of environmental sustainability.
