The David Wilson Library is the new extension to the award-winning University Library which was built in 1975. The design team was asked to create a light, modern library, incorporating a range of new facilities such as a lecture theatre and seminar rooms, remodeling the existing building at the same time. The architects created a contemporary environment, designing four atria spaces which are linked by an internal multi-level street. This architectural decision, along with the extensive use of natural light and ventilation provide an attractive and insightful interior, encouraging the use of the library as a study space. The new external glazed façade makes its presence known at the university square, providing an intuitive entrance to the university library while being in harmony with the constructivist, transparent, wedge-shaped auditoria of James Stirling and James Gowan.
